Body Art

Tattooing, Piercing, Permanent Make-Up and Microblading

Licensure

A Body Art Facility license application must be submitted for any proposed facility. Once plans are approved, a license application can be submitted and construction can begin. Body Art Studio licenses are good from January 1 to December 31. The license is not transferable and license fees are not prorated.

Prior to completing a Body Art License Application, applicants must have a current OSHA-approved bloodborne pathogens certification specific to body art, along with a current CPR certification.  Applicants must have also received a complete series of Hepatitis B vaccinations prior to being licensed.

Apprenticeship

In order to obtain a Body Art Operator license, applicants must complete an apprenticeship that meets the criteria found in the FDHU Rules and Regulations for Body Art Establishments.  The first step is to complete and submit the Body Art Apprentice Application.  They must also take and pass the FDHU Body Art Operators Exam. Exams are administered by appointment only.

During an apprenticeship, an apprentice must have 100 hours of training, 1000 hours of practical experience and perform 400 procedures under the supervision of a licensed body art operator. The apprentice must record the dates and information about the training received, hours of practical experience and completed procedures using the First District Apprentice Procedure Log form and the First District Apprentice Practical Experience form. Body Art Apprentice Licenses are valid for three years from the date of issue. They are not transferable, and are void once the apprentice obtains a Body Art Operator license.

Thinking of getting a tattoo or piercing?

By getting a tattoo or piercing at a licensed establishment, you minimize the chances of infection or contracting a serious or fatal illness. Licensed Body Art Establishments are routinely inspected for cleanliness and safe practices. If you get a tattoo or piercing at a non-licensed body art establishment, you greatly increase your chances of infection or of contracting a disease.
