First District Health Unit is accepting applications for a Public Health Nurse/School Nurse in our Minot office. Job Summary: The Public Health Nurse (PHN) provides nursing services that promote and protect the health of individuals, families, and communities in alignment with public health goals. The PHN is responsible for assessing community health needs, delivering direct care, conducting health education, participating in disease prevention and control activities, and responding to public health emergencies.
Assignment-specific Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provides assessment, evaluation, management, and referral for medical care of students with acute/chronic health conditions and in emergency situations for injuries.
• Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases.
• Maintains all student health records; conducts immunization audits and reviews medication records to ensure compliance.
• Identify health problems via screenings as indicated (i.e., vision, dental, lice checks. scoliosis)
• Facilitates education, training, and guidance to students and staff in the maintenance of good health practices and disease prevention; promotes participation in healthy behaviors.
• Develop health care plans based on need and train school staff on relevant health issues.
• Provide health educational training to staff as indicated to care for students.
• Serves as the liaison and facilitator for access to health care resources in the community.
• Follows all State and Federal laws regarding confidential information and child abuse/neglect reporting requirements.
• Participates in nursing staff meetings and other agency meetings as directed.
• Maintain a cellphone with a reliable service provider (stipend provided)
Public Health Nurse Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assess the health status of individuals, families, and communities to identify needs and develop care plans.
• Provide case management and follow-up for individuals with communicable diseases, chronic conditions, or high-risk factors.
• Administer immunizations, medications, and screenings and perform nursing procedures according to public health protocols.
• Conduct home visits to support maternal-child health, chronic disease management, and health education.
• Participate in community outreach and health promotion activities, including classes, fairs, and campaigns.
• Collaborate with community partners to identify and address local health concerns.
• Document all care and services provided according to local, state, and federal guidelines.
• Complete required clinical and billing documentation accurately and timely in the Electronic Medical Record in accordance with current guidelines and licensure requirements.
• Respond to public health emergencies and outbreaks, including contact tracing and mass vaccination events.
• Serve as a resource for evidence-based health information to clients, providers, and the community.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and other applicable privacy laws.
• Participate in quality improvement and performance management initiatives.
• Mentor and precept nursing students.
• Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with best practices and emerging trends.
• Other duties based on program assignment
• Assist in disaster response as directed by Executive Director.
Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to recognize the needs and concerns of people and to maintain constructive relationships in dealing with them.

• Ability to handle sensitive issues in a mature, confidential manner with integrity and tact.

• Ability to use electronic health records, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Working knowledge of vaccines and immunization schedules.
• Working knowledge of community organizations that provide assistance to children and families.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and make nursing care decisions.
Requirements:
• Current unencumbered North Dakota Registered Nurse license. BSN preferred.
• Must be eligible for Professional Liability Insurance.
• Must have a valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
• Must be willing to travel and work flexible hours.
• ACIP vaccines recommended for healthcare workers within 6 months of employment.
• Must provide a current immunization record prior to employment.
• Must attend all required staff meetings and training.
• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR.
• Must be able to meet requirement for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Physical Requirements:
• Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and walking.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds at a time with or without assistance.
• Be able to pack, haul and transport supplies.
